Damp walls

The problem with damp walls
Moisture in walls can have a variety of causes, from leaking pipes to rising damp from the ground to inadequate ventilation. The results are often mold growth, unpleasant odors, damaged masonry and even health problems. It is important to address this problem as early as possible to avoid major damage.

Damp walls are caused by moisture penetrating laterally and/or rising capillary into the building structure.

Damp walls: The solution
Damp walls

Damp walls can have various causes:
On the one hand, missing damp proof courses in older buildings and on the other hand, defective or deficient damp proof courses in newer buildings. When soil moisture is attracted by the absorbency of building materials in contact with the earth, the wetness migrates through the masonry and leads to structural damage due to surface evaporation. Such damage includes salt efflorescence (saltpeter/nitrates), spalling, sanding out and partial cavities in plaster in places. These are caused by the constant transport of salt and minerals from the soil, whereby the salt migrates into the wall in dissolved form and is crystallized out again during the evaporation process.

The structural damage becomes visually visible on the inside and/or outside of the building as discoloration and/or paint and plaster spalling.

Damp walls: Consequences

Damp walls

Damp walls: these are the consequences
Unchecked and uninterrupted moisture transport into the building walls can lead to financial losses, as well as to the impairment of the quality of living and health. These include:

Expensive structural damage
In that damp walls do not allow for permanent renovations. Short renovation cycles and thus recurring investment costs.

High heating costs
Because soaked exterior walls result in limited thermal insulation.

Reduced quality of living
Damp interior walls lead to inefficient use of space and musty odors.

Health risks
By increasing the accumulation of fungal spores and mold structures on damp wall surfaces and causing allergic reactions or various illnesses such as headaches and asthma.

Wall moisture is a common problem that can occur in many buildings. Effective dehumidification is critical to maintaining the structural integrity and quality of life of the building. The use of professional physical dehumidification techniques can efficiently remove moisture. Early detection and treatment of wall moisture is essential to avoid costly repairs and health risks.
