The problem with damp walls

When soil moisture is attracted by the absorbency of building materials in contact with the earth, the wetness migrates through the masonry and leads to structural damage due to surface evaporation. Such damage includes salt efflorescence (saltpeter/nitrates), spalling, sanding out and partial cavities in plaster in places. These are caused by the constant transport of salt and minerals from the soil, whereby the salt migrates into the wall in dissolved form and is crystallized out again during the evaporation process.

The structural damage becomes visually visible on the inside and/or outside of the building as discoloration and/or paint and plaster spalling.
